Throughout Ireland and anywhere else Irish music is played, traditional musicians meet informally in homes and in pubs. These gatherings are called sessions. The purpose is to allow musicians to celebrate their common interests in Celtic music by playing together in a relaxed, casual setting.

A session is not a concert, and the participants are not a band. A session is a sort of musical potluck. At any given session many or most of the participants have played together before, and there are usually some first timers. During any particular tune, some or most of the players will know it and some may not. Those who do not know the tune typically listen to it or try to figure it out as they go. The emphasis is on fiddle and pipe tunes, but occasionally we sing.
